Fine Print about the Directory for Temporary Files

This gives some fine print details you almost certainly do not need to know about the Directory for Temporary files.

(i) The first time you run AnalyseGE, the program sets the Temporary Directory equal to a default value. This default value depends on the setting of the Environment variables GPTEMP, TMP and TEMP.

If Environment variable GPTEMP is set, the Temporary Directory is the ANGE subdirectory of the directory to which GPTEMP points. For example, if Environment variable GPTEMP is set equal to C:\XXX, the default temporary directory is C:\XXX\GPTEMP\ANGE.

You can set the value of Environment variable GPTEMP. Doing this is the best way to resolve problems with the Temporary Directory since GPTEMP only affects GEMPACK windows programs (whereas the value of TMP - see below - may affect other programs).

(ii) If Environment variable GPTEMP is not set, the Temporary Directory is set equal to the GPTEMP\ANGE subdirectory of the directory to which Environment variable TMP points. For example, if Environment variable TMP is equal to c:\TMP and Environment variable GPTEMP is not set, the default temporary directory is c:\TMP\GPTEMP\ANGE.

The value of Environment variable TMP is always set as part of Windows installation. You can change the value of Environment variable TMP. However changes in the value of TMP may affect other programs whereas changes in the value of GPTEMP will only affect the GEMPACK Windows programs.

(iii) In the unlikely event that Environment variable TMP is not set, AnlayseGE puts its temporary files into the GPTEMP\ANGE subfolder of the folder to which Environment variable TEMP points (if that is set) or of the Windows directory (if TEMP is not set).

(iv) Once you have run any recent version of AnalyseGE, the only way you can change the Temporary Directory is to use the menu item "Specify Temporary Directory" under the Options menu. Resetting the values of the Environment variables GPTEMP or TMP has no effect since AnalyseGE remembers the Temporary Directory from the last time you ran AnalyseGE. [In this respect, AnalyseGE is like the other Windows programs WinGEM, RunGEM and RunDynam but is different from ViewHAR, ViewSOL and TABmate which are always influenced by changes in TMP and/or GPTEMP.]
