What Directory to put Temporary files in

RunDynam needs to create large temporary files as it goes about the various tasks.

By default these are put into a directory on your C: drive. If you are short of disk space on drive C: but have ample space on another drive [for example, D:], you would be wise to select a directory on that drive to be used for temporary files.

If you change this directory, make sure that the directory you specify does not contain any important files. RunDynam may delete some or all of the files in this directory.

RunDynam remembers the Temporary Directory from the last time you ran RunDynam.

If you wish to change where this Temporary Directory is located, you must use the menu item Specify Temporary Directory under the Options menu. The directory dialog box which appears when you select this menu item allows you to type in a non-existent directory which will be created.

Various problems may arise if:

(i) you are not allowed to create or modify files in the Temporary Directory.

(ii) the full path name of a temporary file is very long or contains Asian, Scandinavian or other non-English characters.

(iii) if you are using a model program created with Fortran compiler F77L3, the Temporary Directory should not contain spaces because the F77L3 compiler cannot handle spaces in file names.

For simplicity and safety, we recommend that the name of your Temporary Directory contains only letters (A-Z), digits (0-9) and spaces.

If your Temporary Directory is not set appropriately, RunDynam may give an error message which asks you to change it. If the message asks you to change the Temporary Directory, use menu item Specify temporary directory under the Options menu.

You can use the menu item Check Temporary Directory to check if the Temporary Directory is suitable. This checks if the program for your model can write files to the Temporary Directory.
