Increasing or Decreasing the Number of Years

Consider the example application and suppose you have run all 5 years of the Base, Rerun and Policy.

Increasing the Number of Years

Suppose that you change the Number of Years (on the Sim Overview page) from 5 to 6.

If you go to the Sim Overview page, you will see that the last row (for the new year 2003) is all red which indicates that the files there do not exist. Change these names to be the same as those for the previous year 2002 (which you can do by clicking on the cells one at a time and each time clicking on the As Previous button).

Then select menu item Where to start? under the Tasks menu. This will tell you that you need to start each run at year 2003 because that has not been run. Note that you do not need to first run any of the earlier years again. [If you are doing this yourself, you can actually run all the simulations for the year 2003 by responding Yes to the question Do you want to start a job to carry out the parts not done?.]

Decreasing the Number of Years

Now go to the Sim Overview page and reduce the Number of Years to 4. You can see that now only years 1998 to 2001 show on the Sim Overview page.

Again select menu item Where to start? under the Tasks menu. This will tell you that you all simulations have been run ok but that you need to run the spreadsheet jobs at the end of each run since the end year has changed from 2002 to 2001. Again note that RunDynam does not expect you to run simulations you know are still ok.

Returning to the Original 5 Years

If, after decreasing to 4 years, you wish to revert to the 5 years, you should do so by reloading the Simulation Details file MMMNNNPPP.DS1 using the menu item Load Simulation Details under the File menu. It is always best to revert to a previous run by loading the simulation details sine this also loads the associated record of the times and dates when all files were created. [If, instead, you just change the Number of Years back to 5 on the Sim Overview page, you may get an unpleasant surprise when you ask Where to start?.]

Changing the Starting Year

Above we were discussing changing the end year (since changing only Number of Years on the Sim Overview page just changes the end year).

What if you change the Starting Year from 1998 to 1999 (by changing the year in the First Year of Base Sims box on the Sim Overview page)? This changes many things. The original data file MO.DAT must now be thought of as representing data for year 1998 (instead of 1997). So now the input data for the simulation for year 1999 is MO.DAT whereas previously it was the updated data after the simulation for the year 1998. Not surprisingly, if you ask Where to start?, you will be told that you have to run everything again.

However, you can increase the Starting Year if you also want to remove the corresponding rows from the Closure/Shocks page (and possibly change the First Year Data files shown in the Data part of the Model/Data page. To do this, use either the menu item Omit Some Years at the Start in the File menu, or else the Omit Some Years at the Start button on the Sim Overview page. Before you try this, you should be aware of exactly what happens in these cases and look at why you might want to do this.

Conclusions

Increasing or decreasing the Number of Years is simple. You should not change the 3-character Sim Names and you only have to run the new parts. You can run just the new parts without overwriting any of the simulation results (though you will overwrite the spreadsheet files since they now cover different years).

Changing the Starting Year is much more complicated.

If you just change the Start Year shown on the Sim Overview, you need to run everything. [If you are going to do that, you should really change all 3-character Sim Names as otherwise you will overwrite all of your previous results.]

However it may be useful to omit some years at the start in some cases.
