Differences between Unlimited Exe-image and Source-code GEMPACK
What are the main differences between the Source-Code and Unlimited Executable-Image Versions of GEMPACK?
Both of these Versions can solve arbitrarily large models, limited only by the amount of memory (RAM) on your computer.
The Unlimited Executable-Image Version must use the program GEMSIM to solve models. The Source-code Version can also use
TABLO-generated programs to solve models. TABLO-generated programs can only be created with the Source-Code Version - they cannot
be created with Executable-Image Versions.
GEMSIM takes noticeably longer to solve models than a TABLO-generated program. This is especially true for larger models. A comparison of
solving times for some popular models shows the difference.
A suitable Fortran compiler is required for a Source-Code Version but not for an Executable-Image Version.
The Source-Code Version offers more scope for re-distributing your model to others (more information).
A Source-Code licence also allows you to use the Unlimited Executable-Image Version, which in some cases (eg, for teaching) may be more
convenient (details).
